£40.5m wasted: Levy must ensure “shocking” Spurs man leaves this summer
Injuries have undoubtedly wreaked havoc on Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur squad during the 2024/25 season, severely hindering his progress as manager.
Currently sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table, Spurs are far from the expectations set at the start of the season, despite the significant funds invested by Daniel Levy.
The injury crisis has highlighted the urgent need for new signings to avoid a similar situation in the future. The centre-back position has been particularly affected, with several players having to play out of position to cover the gaps left by key figures like Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
Despite joining in the summer, Archie Gray has rarely been used in his natural central midfield role, instead often being deployed in defense—handling the challenge admirably given his age.
Tottenham’s Injury Crisis in 2024/25
While some players are gradually returning to training, the scale of the injury crisis has been severe, with up to 11 first-team players absent at one point, underscoring the immense challenges Postecoglou has faced. The Australian manager has been open about his frustration with the situation, admitting that the last few months have been extremely difficult.
Despite these setbacks, Spurs still have a shot at ending their trophy drought, with a successful run in the Europa League, advancing to the knockout phase.
However, regardless of their European prospects, Levy must back Postecoglou in the summer transfer window, providing the manager with the necessary depth to fully demonstrate his capabilities.
Clearing Out Deadwood
While new signings are essential, the club also needs to offload some underperforming players to make way for fresh talent. One such player is left-back Sergio Reguilon, who has recently been given another chance after years of being sidelined.
Reguilon, who cost the club £32m in 2020, has struggled to live up to expectations and spent last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford.
With the squad decimated by injuries, the 28-year-old has been brought back into the fold by Postecoglou, making five appearances this season—four of them off the bench, and his only start coming in the FA Cup against non-league Tamworth.
It’s evident from his performances that Reguilon is far from the player Spurs hoped they were signing, making it essential for the club to cut their losses in the upcoming transfer window.
Reguilon, who earns £53k per week, costing the club £2.8m annually, has already pocketed £8.5m during his time at Spurs. When combined with his £32m transfer fee, the club has spent £40.5m on a player who has failed to meet the expectations set upon him.
To navigate their current struggles, Spurs must not only make smart signings in the summer but also clear out underperforming players like Reguilon to free up funds for reinforcements.
Moving on from Reguilon should be the first step in Postecoglou’s rebuild of the squad.
