“Alan Shearer Drops Bombshell Carabao Cup Final Claim as ‘Awful’ Newcastle United Suffer Crushing Man City Loss
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer delivered a scathing critique of his former club following their heavy 4-0 defeat to Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday.
Shearer slammed the “unacceptable performance” as the Magpies were torn apart by City, leaving them with little to show for their hopes of securing their first-ever Premier League win at the Etihad Stadium. Despite coming off the back of cup victories over Arsenal and Birmingham City, Eddie Howe’s side were undone by a disastrous first-half display that was ruthlessly punished by the reigning champions.
January signing Omar Marmoush put City ahead in the 19th minute, collecting a long ball from goalkeeper Ederson and calmly lifting it over Martin Dubravka. The Egyptian doubled his tally just before the half-hour mark and completed his hat-trick soon after, following some clever build-up play from Savinho. James McAtee sealed the win in the final five minutes, leaving Newcastle with nothing to show for their efforts as their poor run at the Etihad continued.
Howe expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance, stating: “Off the ball, we didn’t deliver a competitive, energetic performance. We were off on our duels, and against the best team in the Premier League, maybe the world, it becomes very difficult. They dominate the ball for long periods, and if you don’t get the first part right, it’s tough. Sadly, that led to a disappointing performance.”
As a pundit on Match of the Day, Shearer didn’t hold back in his assessment. He suggested some players might have had their focus on next month’s Carabao Cup Final against Liverpool and described the game as an “absolute horror show.”
“It was much better from Manchester City, but it was an absolute horror show from Newcastle United,” Shearer said. “It was an unacceptable performance. Whether too many players had one eye on the cup final or not, I don’t know, but they were all over the place today, they were dreadful. Manchester City, very good again.”
Newcastle now have a free midweek to regroup ahead of their home match next Sunday against fellow European contenders Nottingham Forest.
