“I do think this is a sensible decision by the PGMOL”- PGMOL questioned as late Leeds United v Sunderland referee issue emerges
Leeds United will face Sunderland in a crucial Championship showdown on Monday, with a last-minute change in officiating announced.
Originally set to be officiated by Craig Pawson, the match will now be refereed by Stuart Attwell. BBC Radio Leeds reporter Adam Pope broke the news on his personal X account on February 17, just hours before kick-off at Elland Road.
Neither the EFL nor PGMOL have clarified the reason behind the switch, especially so close to the match. There have been unconfirmed rumors suggesting that Pawson may have ties to one of the Sheffield clubs, but these claims remain unverified.
Stuart Attwell to Take Charge of Leeds vs Sunderland
Regardless of the official reason, Attwell will now officiate this crucial promotion clash between Leeds and Sunderland in West Yorkshire.
Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett, who hails from Sheffield, believes removing Pawson due to his potential Sheffield connections was a wise decision, but he has raised questions about the timing of the change.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Hackett said: “I think this is a sensible move by the PGMOL.
Referees declare their supported teams at the start of the season, and in my time, if Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday were competing for promotion, I wouldn’t be assigned to officiate one of their matches in the top five. The same rule applied for relegation battles.”
He added, “However, I think the PGMOL could have handled this situation better with a bit more planning. That said, there’s no question about Pawson’s integrity.”
Leeds’ Major Clash with Sunderland
Leeds United, managed by Daniel Farke, are firmly on track to achieve their primary goal for the season: promotion back to the Premier League.
Securing the top spot would be the perfect finish, and a victory against a strong Sunderland side would significantly boost their chances.
Leeds are currently second, just one point behind Sheffield United, but they have a game in hand. Burnley, in third, are four points behind, while Sunderland are seven points off the pace, with the same number of matches played.
This sets the stage for an exciting match at Elland Road, which will now be overseen by Attwell instead of Pawson.
