‘Pure baller’… Daniel Farke says Leeds United have ‘one of the best’ players in England
Leeds United had a mix of highs and lows in their 2-1 comeback win over Sunderland on Monday night, but in the end, it was a victory that left them on top.
Many had expected Leeds to cruise past Sunderland, but the Black Cats made things difficult for Daniel Farke’s team. In the end, Leeds may have considered themselves fortunate to claim all three points.
However, champions often create their own luck, and Leeds are certainly on course to secure the Championship title this season, which would be Farke’s third second-tier title in his managerial career.
Farke played a key role in the victory with his second-half substitutions. He brought on Joe Rothwell and Pascal Struijk, and the pair combined to score twice, with Struijk netting both goals to seal a dramatic win at Elland Road.
After the match, Farke praised Rothwell, who has been in and out of the starting lineup recently, especially following Ilia Gruev’s disappointing performance. Rothwell came off the bench and provided both assists for Struijk’s goals.
Farke said: “We don’t need to talk about Joe’s quality. He’s a pure baller, one of the best players in this country with the ball.
His passing, technique, and touches with his right foot are outstanding. He’s great at set-pieces and driving the game forward. If you love football, you love Joe Rothwell.”
Rothwell, on loan from Bournemouth, has made a significant impact this season, with four assists in 30 Championship appearances for Leeds.
Although he hasn’t started a league match since the 7-0 victory over Cardiff City in early February, he may play a more prominent role in the upcoming match against Sheffield United.
Rothwell is set to return to Bournemouth in the summer, though his future with the club remains uncertain.
With 18 months left on his current contract with the Cherries, Rothwell recently commented on his future, saying: “It’s gone as well as it could have, it took some time, but when I got the chance, I knew I could show what I’m about. It’s gone better than I expected. Who knows what will happen next season?”
If Leeds achieve promotion and Bournemouth are willing to sell, it might be an easy decision for Leeds to secure Rothwell’s services permanently, especially if he continues to deliver performances like the one he did on Monday.
