Leeds United’s push for promotion is gaining momentum, and it’s hard to imagine anyone stopping them. On Monday evening, the Whites secured a crucial victory over Sunderland, bringing them closer to a Premier League return.
Defender Pascal Struijk played a pivotal role, scoring twice in the final 12 minutes to keep Leeds undefeated at home since September 15. The win also increased their lead to seven points over third-placed Burnley in the race for automatic promotion.
If Leeds clinch promotion this season, broadcaster Jeff Stelling believes they will need to bolster their attacking options to compete effectively in the Premier League. “Leeds weren’t extraordinary (against Sunderland), but their persistence paid off. They lack a bit of creativity, but it was a huge win,” he said.
Mentally, he added, the victory would provide a major confidence boost ahead of crucial games against Sheffield United and West Brom. Stelling also mentioned that if Leeds go up, they’ll need significant reinforcement in the summer. “Elland Road is a huge advantage for them. It’s a tough place for opponents to play,” he noted.
Troy Deeney, former Watford striker, agreed with Stelling’s view on Elland Road, recalling how intimidating it was to play there. “I remember with Watford, we always tried to get the crowd to turn on Leeds. I thought their squad had better individual quality in the play-off final last year, but they sometimes went missing. This year, they’ve rebounded well, but if they make the jump to the Premier League, they’ll need reinforcements.”
Deeney also acknowledged Leeds’ strong season and their likely promotion, concluding, “They’re having a great campaign and will probably go up.”
