Wolves secured a new contract for Matheus Cunha during the January transfer window, but how favorable was the deal for the club?
There’s no question that Cunha is currently Wolves’ standout player, impressing far beyond expectations at Molineux.

Concerns Over Matheus Cunha’s New Contract After Wolves’ Extension
Although Cunha will remain at Wolves until the end of the season, it seems almost certain his time at Molineux will end in the summer. His new contract includes a release clause, reportedly set at £62.5m, which journalist Liam Keen discussed in the latest episode of the E&S Wolves Podcast.
Keen clarified that there are no add-ons or additional conditions to the clause: “It’s a standard £62.5m release clause, and it’s not a relegation clause, meaning it’s likely to be activated, and he’ll likely move on in the summer.”
What followed in the podcast may raise some concerns for Wolves fans, as a significant condition tied to the release clause was revealed.
The Terms of Cunha’s Release Clause Raise Questions
Keen explained that while the release clause is set at £62.5m, the payment won’t be made upfront. Instead, portions of the fee will be paid in installments. This setup makes it less likely that any club will offer more than the £62.5m to negotiate for more favorable payment terms.
“Clubs could come to Wolves and offer the full £62.5m but ask for payment terms, and Wolves have the right to refuse that if they choose,” Keen said. “So, while the money won’t come all at once, the deal is structured in a straightforward manner with the amount spread out.”
Thus, while Wolves are set to lose their best player for £62.5m—potentially below his actual value—the club won’t receive an immediate cash influx from the sale.
Cunha’s Contract Terms Could Prove Problematic for Wolves
Although Wolves are poised to secure a record transfer fee for Cunha, the deal might not be as beneficial as it seems. Keen mentioned that he values the Brazilian at around the “early £70m mark,” meaning the release clause is lower than expected.
Given that Cunha has been directly involved in an impressive 45.7% of Wolves’ Premier League goals this season, parting ways with the forward—who is approaching his peak years—could be a major blow for the club, especially for a deal that doesn’t fully benefit them.
It appears the contract was rushed, likely due to the heavy interest in Cunha during the January window and his agent’s desire to take advantage of the market at that time.
While Cunha’s departure from Wolves in the summer now seems inevitable, the club faces a much bigger concern: finding an adequate replacement without the benefit of receiving an upfront payment for the transfer.
