‘I can’t understand’ – David Moyes left gobsmacked by decision in Manchester United vs Everton

David Moyes was left confused as to why Everton’s late penalty against Manchester United was reversed on Saturday afternoon.

United fought back from a 2-0 deficit at Goodison Park, with Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte scoring brilliant goals in the second half to level the game.

However, in injury time, Everton was awarded a penalty after Ashley Young went down in the box following a challenge.

Matthijs de Ligt appeared to tug on Young’s shirt, but the penalty was rescinded after a VAR review. Moyes expressed his disbelief over why the referee didn’t stand by his initial decision.

“I’m really pleased we got a point because it’s another step towards safety, but I’m disappointed we didn’t take all three. We played here and drew 2-2 against Liverpool, which felt like a win,” Moyes said.

“Today’s 2-2 felt almost like a defeat, but we played really well. A free kick changed the momentum. I don’t think Manchester United caused us too many problems until that point.”

Commenting on the penalty decision, Moyes said: “I don’t understand why the referee on the field makes the decision, and then, if it’s clear and obvious, he should go to the screen. But I didn’t see that.

I thought the referee made the right call at the time and should have stuck with it.”
