Everton forward Beto put his team ahead against Manchester United at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, but the goal was confirmed only after a lengthy VAR review.
The Premier League has clarified that there was no offside infringement during Beto’s goal against United.
Beto gave Everton the lead after a chaotic sequence in the penalty area. United failed to clear the ball multiple times, and it eventually fell to Beto, who drove it into the ground and into the net.
Although the goal was initially allowed, there was a three-minute delay as VAR reviewed the potential for offside. After checking, the goal was confirmed, with Ruben Amorim left with his arms outstretched.
On Saturday, the Premier League issued a statement explaining the decision: “The referee’s goal decision was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, as there was no offside violation by either Lindstrøm or Beto.”
This goal marked another impressive performance for Beto under David Moyes. The former Udinese striker now has five goals in his last four matches under the Scottish manager.
The goal also highlighted United’s ongoing defensive struggles, with the team managing just one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League matches. TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist remarked: “I believe Beto was onside.
Initially, the ball comes off a defender – it’s poor defending from United. I’m not sure how they didn’t clear it.
“Beto made the right move, hitting it into the ground and scoring. The finish was brilliant – it would have been easy to miss or put it over the bar. United had four chances to clear it, and they didn’t.”

The situation worsened for United just before the 30-minute mark as Abdoulaye Doucoure doubled Everton’s lead with a header from close range. Jack Harrison had fired a powerful shot that was saved by Andre Onana, but the ball bounced up, and Doucoure outjumped Harry Maguire to head it home.
Both of Everton’s goals were met with chants of ‘going down’ from the Goodison Park crowd. Amorim’s side now sits 15th in the standings, 12 points clear of the relegation zone.
Next, United will face struggling Ipswich in midweek, while Everton takes on Brentford on Wednesday evening.
