“Is Steven Gerrard Ready for a Dramatic Rangers Return? Club’s Search for Clement’s Replacement Heats Up
Steven Gerrard, currently out of work, has emerged as the early frontrunner to replace Philippe Clement, who is set to depart from his role.
The club may already be aware of Gerrard’s potential interest in taking over as he seeks to revive his career.
Record Sport understands that Clement is on the brink of being dismissed following a poor season with Rangers, one that looks likely to end without any silverware.
The team’s disappointing loss to St Mirren at Ibrox has been seen as the final straw.
Since leaving Ibrox, the former Liverpool legend has faced a challenging managerial journey. He was dismissed by Aston Villa before taking a chance in the Saudi Pro League.
However, his tenure at Al-Ettifaq ended abruptly earlier this year, with the club battling relegation.
Following his exit from Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard has been linked to the Rangers job once again.
In 2022, Gerrard confided in Ibrox icon Graeme Souness, revealing he would be open to returning at the right time.
Souness recalled their conversation: “I saw Steven a couple of weeks ago in Portugal. He seemed in fine form, and I asked him if he wanted to go back.
He said he would consider it if an interesting opportunity came up.” Souness also mentioned that Gerrard had concerns about the fan reaction to a potential return after leaving mid-season to pursue his Premier League career with Villa.
He added, “Would the supporters be happy with him coming back? I’m not sure. They may feel he left them at a difficult time.”
However, Rangers legend Ally McCoist expressed confidence that Gerrard still has strong support among Glasgow fans.
He said, “It wouldn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox. He’s highly respected by the supporters because of the league title he won, and his next job is crucial for him.
Things haven’t gone as planned since he left Rangers. It’s similar to Frank Lampard’s situation with Coventry—his next appointment was very important too.”
