Merson believes that Newcastle’s impending Carabao Cup final presents a significant challenge for Howe as he prepares for a crucial “must-win” match against top-four contenders Nottingham Forest.
Following their qualification to face Liverpool in the final, Newcastle were hammered 4-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Their form has dipped recently, with three defeats in their last four league matches. Howe has stressed that their season could be derailed if they solely concentrate on the Carabao Cup final.
“If we’re looking ahead to the final too much, we’ll be in trouble,” Howe said. “Because by the time the final arrives, our Premier League season could effectively be over. It can’t be our main focus.”
Newcastle will face Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and West Ham United in the Premier League, as well as Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup fifth round, before the Carabao Cup final.
