‘What a nonsense’ – Robbie Savage blasts Leeds United decision ahead of Sheffield United test
Robbie Savage has expressed that it’s “absolutely ridiculous” that Leeds United manager Daniel Farke will serve a one-match touchline ban tomorrow night.
Farke received his third yellow card of the season during the final moments of Leeds’ 2-1 comeback victory over Sunderland earlier this week.
The German coach was cautioned by referee Stuart Attwell for stepping out of his technical area and onto the pitch to celebrate Pascal Struijk’s late winner.
As a result, Farke will be forced to watch Leeds’ upcoming match against Sheffield United from the director’s box.
In his weekly column for the Mirror, Savage stated, “I loved the passion of Farke’s celebration after Pascal Struijk’s 95th-minute winner against Sunderland.
And it is absolutely ridiculous that he will serve a touchline ban for Monday night’s crucial clash with Sheffield United because referee Stuart Attwell deemed it worthy of a yellow card. What a nonsense.”
Chris Wilder, the Sheffield United manager, also called the decision “ridiculous.” Farke, visibly disappointed with the ruling, discussed the situation at his pre-match press conference.
“I stepped a few yards outside my coaching zone for six or seven seconds. If someone thinks I deserve a yellow card for that, I have to accept the rules,” he said.
“I always try to be self-critical, but I can’t remember a single game in my career where, after the final whistle, my first action wasn’t to walk over and shake hands with the opponent’s manager. I’ve never celebrated or been disrespectful in that way.
“I’d actually argue that there is no other manager in Western Europe who celebrates goals less than I do, but my players are to blame because they score so many goals.
“The fire inside me is strong. I try to control it, but sometimes there’s a moment where I just can’t. I’m not a robot, I’m a human being.
If someone thinks I deserve a yellow card for that, I’ll accept it. I’ll try next time not to celebrate at all, but I won’t tell my players to score fewer goals.”
