“Leeds United Fans React to Illan Meslier’s Shocking First-Half ‘Disaster’ Against Sheffield United
Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier’s error leading to Sheffield United’s opening goal could be attributed to a “spiral” of mistakes just moments before, according to pundits.
Meslier, who has faced criticism for errors this season, was unlucky in the 14th minute at Bramall Lane.
His save rebounded off the bar directly to Tyreece Campbell, whose header then bounced off the post, deflected off Meslier’s arm, and went into the net as an own goal.
This incident followed two earlier moments when Meslier appeared uncertain while attempting to claim high balls into the box, creating a sense of nervousness among the Leeds defense.
At halftime, former Leeds midfielder Stuart Dallas described the mistake as a “disaster.”
He told Sky Sports, “The first save is incredible, but then I don’t know what happens—he tries to get across, but his arms aren’t under control, and it goes in. However, the ball into the box was excellent.”
Dallas also pointed out Joe Rodon’s mistake in losing track of his man, and suggested Leeds could have applied more pressure on the ball before the cross came in.
“But once it comes in, you have to deal with it. Illan made a fantastic first save, but the second one is a disaster.”
Fellow pundit Jobi McAnuff pointed to Meslier’s earlier mistakes as the cause of his failure to save the goal.
“It’s a terrible, terrible miss from Tyreece Campbell, he’ll be very relieved,” McAnuff said. “You can see he’s trying to direct it, and it comes off the post. But Meslier gets himself into a real muddle.
We saw the first two mistakes, and it spiraled from there. If he hadn’t made those earlier errors, I think he saves it—it’s something we’ve seen from him before.”
