“Matheus Cunha Set to Shock Brazil: Journalist Reveals Surprising National Team Update Ahead of World Cup

Matheus Cunha is currently one of the top players in the Premier League, but how does his form impact his chances with Brazil’s national team? Molineux News spoke to Brazilian journalist Rogerio Amaral Junior for insights.

When Wolves signed Cunha from Atletico Madrid in January 2023 for £45 million, the move raised some questions. However, the transfer now seems like a bargain.

Wolves knew they were acquiring a player of high caliber, but it was clear that Cunha had struggled with goal-scoring.

Now, those struggles are hard to believe, as the 25-year-old has been in outstanding form, thriving under both Vitor Pereira and Gary O’Neil’s management.

Matheus Cunha’s National Team Hopes Despite Premier League Success

Although Cunha has been involved in 36 Premier League goals since the start of the 2023 season, he has been overlooked by Brazil at the international level.

Since the beginning of the 2023/24 season, he has only played 36 minutes for his country and hasn’t been called up since September 2023.

It’s puzzling why Cunha is being ignored on the international stage, which led Molineux News to consult Rogerio Amaral Junior, Editor-in-Chief at Vamo Futebol, for an explanation.

Junior shared that Cunha’s lack of appeal in Brazil stems from the fact that he left the country without having played for a major Brazilian club, making it harder for fans to rally behind his inclusion.

He noted that, unlike players like Joao Gomes and Andre, Cunha hasn’t gained the same level of popularity among Brazilian fans.

However, Junior pointed out that Brazilian football journalists hold a different perspective. “Among journalists following international football, Cunha is regarded as a potential starter for the Brazilian team and has received significant praise for his form at Wolves.”

With over a decade of experience in sports journalism, Junior believes that Cunha has the potential to surprise many, offering great value to Brazil’s national team.

“Right now, Brazil doesn’t have many options for the forward position, and coach Dorival Junior has been testing various players. Personally, I don’t see anyone performing as well as Matheus.”

As Cunha continues to impress at Wolves, he will be focused on maintaining his top form in hopes of securing a spot in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, an opportunity he views as vital after his past setbacks.

Cunha’s Heartbreak Over Missing the 2022 World Cup

Cunha was devastated when he was left out of Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad, marking another painful moment in his career. Speaking to BBC, he revealed the emotional toll it took on him, admitting he struggled with depressive feelings after the snub. He thanked Wolves for offering him a fresh start at such a low point.

“It’s a little bit of depression. You go down, you don’t want to go to training, you don’t want to do things,” Cunha reflected on the rejection. “I had good days at Atletico, but after, there was a lot of doubt. When Wolves came in, one of my dreams was playing in the Premier League, and they gave me that opportunity.”

Since then, Cunha’s performances at Molineux have only strengthened his case for international recognition, with his form giving him renewed hope for the future.
