Tottenham’s James Maddison should be substituted at halftime against Manchester City.

Ange Postecoglou made a bold choice by leaving Son Heung-min on the bench during the Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday (26 February).

Dejan Kulusevski was also left out, as predicted by Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham in his exclusive conversation with Tottenham News.

However, these decisions backfired when Erling Haaland put City ahead after just 12 minutes in North London. From that point, the visitors continued to dominate, missing several chances.

Postecoglou must respond by making at least one change at the break, with Maddison being the player to come off.

Maddison must be substituted at halftime for Tottenham against Manchester City

Roy Keane had criticized Maddison before the match, and based on the Englishman’s first-half performance, it seems he was right.

The 28-year-old struggled, completing just 72% of his passes, with only one of his four crosses reaching their target. Both of his long balls were off the mark [Sofascore].

Furthermore, Maddison failed to complete any of his dribbles, although he did perform slightly better defensively, winning four out of seven ground duels. However, he also gave away possession 14 times in the first half.

With Kulusevski available on the bench, Postecoglou has a straightforward opportunity to make a like-for-like change.

Postecoglou needs a strong team talk at halftime

While substituting Maddison could make a difference, Spurs will need more than just one change after their disappointing first-half performance. The team struggled to get going, and Postecoglou will need an inspiring team talk during the break.

Otherwise, City will continue to dominate and secure a comfortable victory.
