Wolves manager Vitor Pereira was candid in his post-match press conference following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham, emphasizing the costly mistakes that made life difficult for his side.
Pereira issued a stark warning to his players after Wolves conceded early in both halves, putting themselves in a challenging position.
Ryan Sessegnon gave Fulham the lead just 65 seconds into the match, marking his first Premier League start in two years, before Rodrigo Muniz netted again shortly after halftime, putting Fulham 2-1 ahead.
The goals were the result of avoidable defensive errors. Sessegnon’s opener came too easily after Nelson Semedo lost track of him, allowing the wing-back to make a run behind the defense.
Muniz’s goal was similarly poor defensively, as Adama Traore was able to thread a simple pass through to Muniz, who then chipped the ball over an off-balance Jose Sa.
Wolves boss points finger at mistake-makers
Pereira expressed his frustration, acknowledging Wolves’ response after both goals but stressing the disappointment of conceding in such straightforward manners.
While he didn’t directly name the players at fault, it was clear that he was unhappy with Semedo and Santiago Bueno’s failure to track the goalscorers.
“Today, I’m frustrated because after just three days, we play again and concede a very easy goal at the start of the first half.
We can’t afford to have our focus and concentration slip like that,” Pereira said in his press conference. “We did react well and created chances, scoring a goal, but when you start the second half in the same way, it’s extremely difficult.”
Pereira also noted a drop in energy in the second half, highlighting the lack of movement and pressing that Wolves are known for.
He also pointed out that Fulham had more depth to their squad, particularly with the impact of their substitutions, while Wolves lacked such options.
The loss leaves Wolves five points clear of the relegation zone, with Ipswich Town and Leicester City still to play midweek.
Pereira will be hoping that the result against Fulham doesn’t have long-term consequences, but he stressed that such mistakes cannot be repeated in future matches.
“The players gave everything, but not in the right way,” Pereira added. “We need to correct these mistakes. It’s about us, not the other team. Tomorrow, we start working to fix these errors.”
