Despite a determined effort from Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, they were defeated 2-1 at home by Fulham.
Although the Old Gold dominated large parts of the match, they were unable to secure a win against a Fulham side fighting for European qualification.
Vitor Pereira’s team found themselves trailing 1-0 just a minute into the game after Fulham produced a brilliant attacking move.
A series of quick passes saw Ryan Sessegnon find himself in Wolves’ penalty box, where he calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jose Sa.
Wolves’ defending left much to be desired, as they gave Sessegnon too much space on the left.
However, Wolves responded in the 18th minute with a stunning strike from midfielder Joao Gomes, who scored with a powerful volley into the top corner of the net.
The second half began poorly for Wolves, mirroring their first-half start. Just two minutes after the restart, Fulham doubled their lead through Rodrigo Muniz, who made a clever run behind the defense and chipped the ball over an advancing Sa.
Pereira’s side could not recover from this setback and ultimately suffered defeat, although there were notable performances, particularly from Matheus Cunha and Gomes.
Wolves’ Standout Players Against Fulham
Wolves’ Brazilian duo proved to be pivotal despite the loss. While Cunha did not score or assist, he played a key role in the attack.
His off-the-ball contributions were especially impressive. According to Sofascore, the 25-year-old won nine out of 14 ground duels, created one chance, and completed two out of three dribbles.
Gomes, who played a more advanced midfield role, was also outstanding. His sensational strike, which left Fulham’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno with no chance, was a highlight, but his creative play also stood out.
Journalist Charlie Haffenden praised Gomes, giving him an 8/10 rating and noting that he “created one good opportunity” for Cunha.
Despite the loss, there were positives to take from the match against Marco Silva’s team. However, some players struggled, including one who was played out of position.
The Wolves Player Who Struggled Against Fulham
January signing Marshall Munetsi had a challenging night, playing as a centre-forward despite the availability of Jorgen Stand Larsen on the bench.
The experiment of placing the Zimbabwean midfielder in a more advanced role did not yield the desired results.
Munetsi, naturally a midfielder, appeared isolated in the forward position. While he was present in the opposition penalty area, he failed to make a significant impact and might have been more effective in his usual midfield role.
Statistically, Munetsi’s struggles were evident. He had just 24 touches throughout the match, fewer than goalkeeper Sa, and won only three out of six duels. He also failed to register a shot on target from two attempts.
Haffenden highlighted one of Munetsi’s key issues, noting that he “was unable to make much stick in the final third” despite being “heavily involved” in both attack and defense.
Ultimately, starting Munetsi as a centre-forward instead of Larsen did not pay off, leaving Pereira with decisions to make ahead of Wolves’ next match, an FA Cup clash against Bournemouth.
