Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Fulham at Molineux on Tuesday night.
The Old Gold conceded early goals in each half, with Ryan Sessegnon and Rodrigo Muniz scoring for Fulham, leaving Wolves with little chance to recover.
Despite the defeat, Vitor Pereira’s side had several opportunities to secure a win. According to Sofascore, Wolves registered 18 shots compared to Fulham’s 11, and dominated possession with 60%, reflecting their control over the game.
However, they created fewer expected goals (1.31xG) than Fulham (1.69xG), showing that possession did not translate into clear chances.
Nevertheless, there were some positives for Wolves, particularly the performance of Matheus Cunha, who continues to shine.
Cunha’s Importance to Wolves
Although it wasn’t one of his best performances, Cunha’s contribution was crucial. The Brazilian was outstanding without the ball, winning nine out of 14 duels and demonstrating his value beyond just goals and assists.
In his 84 appearances for Wolves, Cunha has netted 30 goals and provided 13 assists, playing a key role in the club’s Premier League survival.
He is closing in on a historic achievement, needing just five more goals this season to break the club’s record for most goals in a single Premier League campaign. That would bring him to 18 goals, surpassing Raul Jiménez’s 17 from the 2019/20 season.
Cunha’s role in the team cannot be overstated. He has become one of Wolves’ most influential players in recent years, with his goals being instrumental in the club’s performance.
Wolves’ £75m Star in the Making
Wolves’ squad features several talented Brazilian players, which adds excitement for the future.
Alongside Cunha, players like young right-back Pedro Lima and midfielders Andre and Joao Gomes have made significant impacts.
Gomes, in particular, stood out against Fulham, scoring Wolves’ only goal with a superb volley into the top corner from 10 yards out.
He also played in a more advanced role than usual, contributing creatively in the final third.
Charlie Haffenden of Birmingham World gave Gomes an 8/10 rating, noting that he created a good opportunity for Cunha.
This season has been a strong one for Gomes, who has made 28 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing two assists. His performances have been vital for Wolves’ fight to stay in the Premier League.
Gomes has also been statistically comparable to Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, according to FBref.
Both players show similarities in their style of play, with Gomes averaging more tackles and interceptions than Mac Allister, and the two are closely matched in progressive passes.
Mac Allister is highly valued at £75m by the CIES Football Observatory, and given Gomes’ similar profile, he could also reach such a valuation in the future.
As one of Wolves’ key players, Gomes will be crucial to their survival efforts this season and could become an even more valuable asset in the years to come.
