“Wolves Boss Vitor Pereira Drops Harsh Truth About Matheus Cunha’s Future as £62m Exit Looms
Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has openly acknowledged that the club cannot rely solely on Matheus Cunha to avoid relegation, amid transfer interest from top Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool.
Pereira admitted that while Wolves are five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, they could be in danger if results go against them in upcoming matches.
Wolves missed an opportunity to extend that gap when Fulham defeated them 2-1 at Molineux on Tuesday.
Despite some chances created, Wolves’ defensive errors and lack of attacking threat, especially in the second half, were concerning.
Cunha had a decent performance, registering three shots on target, but his efforts weren’t enough to secure a point for Wolves.
He had previously scored in the last three Premier League matches, playing a key role in securing six vital points, but without his direct involvement, Wolves struggled to find the back of the net.
When asked about whether the team relies too much on Cunha, Pereira responded: “We cannot build a team around one player. We need to create situations and dynamics that allow us to score without relying on him alone.”
Although the manager did not blame Cunha’s performance for the defeat, he stressed that Wolves’ defensive mistakes were the main issue. “We can’t afford to concede goals at the start of both halves. We need to defend better,” Pereira said.
He acknowledged that the team made mistakes that need to be corrected, adding, “It’s about us, not the other team. The players gave their best, but not in the right way.”
Despite a relatively comfortable position in the league, Wolves’ survival could look very different without Cunha’s contributions.
His importance to the team is clear, but with a new £62.5 million release clause coming into play in July, his time at Molineux may be limited. Interest from top clubs only adds to the likelihood of his departure.
Pereira emphasized the need for other players to step up and contribute more goals if Wolves are to avoid trouble next season.
