Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has finally spoken out following Philippe Clement’s departure from the club.
Clement was dismissed as manager on Sunday after a dismal 2-0 loss at home to St Mirren, which proved to be the final straw for the Belgian after a season marked by inconsistent performances and results.
Following Rangers’ 4-2 comeback win over Kilmarnock, Dessers shared his thoughts on the exit of his former manager: “It’s always tough,” he said. “Football gets talked about a lot, but we also see the human side, and it’s difficult and emotional for everyone involved.
But then, 48 hours later, you have an important game, and you have to refocus and get back on track.”
Dessers was a standout performer in the Kilmarnock match, scoring twice to help secure the win. He equalized with a close-range finish and then put Rangers ahead 3-2 with a well-placed strike into the bottom corner.
The 30-year-old, often criticized by fans, has now scored 20 goals in 41 appearances for Rangers this season.
Interim manager Barry Ferguson, who took over on Monday, was quick to praise Dessers after the match: “I thought Cyriel led the line really well,” he said. “I have high standards, and sometimes I think the players wonder what they’ve got with me on the sidelines.
But that’s what it’s all about. I thought he was excellent, and I got a good response from the team. One thing I’ve always said about Cyriel is that he gives everything, and tonight he was superb.”
