Tony Mowbray believes West Bromwich Albion fully earned their point at Elland Road on Saturday, despite falling behind early to league leaders Leeds United.
The Baggies were caught off guard in the opening ten minutes when Junior Firpo headed Leeds into the lead.
However, Darnell Furlong responded with a well-placed header to level the score before halftime, and that’s how it stayed in Yorkshire.
Mowbray was pleased with his side’s resilience, highlighting their spirit and character throughout the match.
Albion had a few chances to take all three points against a Leeds team that is now unbeaten in 17 consecutive Championship matches.
Reflecting on the performance, Mowbray said: “I don’t want to get too carried away, but we came here with the aim of showing our credentials.
This is West Bromwich Albion—we should come to Leeds and feel we can compete and try to win.
Leeds are having an excellent season, and they’re a well-coached side, but I thought we grew into the game after the first 20 minutes, where we were a bit too cautious.”
Mowbray continued: “We were much better in the second part of the first half, finding the spaces we were looking for, playing forward, and getting into dangerous areas.
We had a great chance through John Swift before they scored.
As the game progressed, I felt we posed enough of a threat to their goal. We were really competitive, and that’s exactly what we should be.”
He added: “We have a lot of strong players in the team, and that’s important.
Everyone put in a great performance today. Despite going behind early, we fought back well.
The ball for their goal was brilliant, and it’s always frustrating to concede from a full-back getting into the box—he scored last week against Sheffield United too. But we didn’t let it get to us, and overall, we deserved the point.”
Looking ahead, Mowbray hoped the performance would boost his players’ confidence. “I hope this performance gives them confidence, though I’m sure they already have plenty.
Now we’ve got to focus on producing a good result against QPR next week.”
Finally, Mowbray reiterated his belief that success isn’t about the opposition’s name or reputation but about how his team plays:
“It’s not about the shirts or the names on the back. It’s about how we play and how we affect the match.
If we keep performing like this, we’ll win plenty of games and secure our place in the play-offs.”
