If there was any moment that encapsulated Daniel Farke’s Leeds United at this point in the season, it came just nine minutes into Saturday’s early Championship clash against Tony Mowbray’s West Brom at Elland Road.
One of the key features of Leeds’ recent form—especially during their five-game winning streak where they scored 18 goals—has been their shared goalscoring responsibility.
Remarkably, eight players in the starting XI against West Brom had found the net during that run.
This collective freedom to attack, granted by Farke, has made a significant impact on the team’s performance.
As he did just five days earlier against Sheffield United, it was Junior Firpo charging into the box to guide a well-placed header past the Baggies’ goalkeeper, following a pinpoint cross from Dan James.
With players like Manor Solomon having an off-day, and neither Brenden Aaronson nor Joel Piroe at their sharpest, it’s invaluable for Leeds to have multiple players capable of stepping up with a goal.
Tony Mowbray Praises Firpo and James’ Connection
West Brom manager Tony Mowbray, fully aware of Leeds’ habit of pushing even full-backs into attacking positions, couldn’t help but praise the movement and execution.
Stopping such a well-timed run and precise cross, he admitted, is no easy feat.
“To be honest with you, it was an amazing run from their full-back,” Mowbray said. “He did it the other day against Sheffield United.
How their left-back finds himself in the box, I don’t know… It was a great run, and the ball from James was just about perfect.”
Not many teams in the Championship allow their full-backs to make attacking runs usually reserved for strikers, but this is a Leeds side full of confidence right now.
That confidence did take a slight hit, however, when West Brom equalized shortly after Firpo’s goal, leveling the score with a header of their own.
Farke Not Frustrated Despite Dropped Points
Leeds’ winning streak was halted when West Brom’s Darnell Furlong scored a looping header over Illan Meslier, but Farke wasn’t too downcast after the match.
Leeds are still on their longest unbeaten run in 33 years, and as long as that continues, automatic promotion remains within reach.
“I’m not frustrated,” Farke said after the match, with the spring sunshine warming West Yorkshire. “We want to win at home, but sometimes you have to accept a draw.
I was a bit nervous after so many emotional games and quick turnarounds, but we were on it.”
“We score the first goal, the sun is shining, and you think it could be an easier game, but then we allowed ourselves to enjoy it a bit too much.
You could feel the equalizer coming. Maybe we were over-confident and lost dominance of the game. When you lose momentum, it’s hard to get it back.”
“West Brom is a good team, and in the end, getting a point was important. I’m not overly happy, just a draw, but it could turn out to be a valuable one. No real complaints today.”
