“Criminal”- Michael Stewart cannot believe BBC Footage of Rangers defender v Motherwell
Michael Stewart was left stunned as footage of Jefte surfaced following Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Motherwell on Saturday.
Barry Ferguson suffered his first loss at Ibrox as Rangers were beaten by goals from Luke Armstrong and Thomas Sparrow within the first 30 minutes.
Cyriel Dessers pulled one back for Rangers in the second half, but it was Jefte, the Brazilian defender, who again made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Jefte’s Disastrous Display for Rangers
Jefte had been linked with a shock move to Chelsea in recent weeks, but his defending during the match, particularly his role in allowing Sparrow a clear run on goal, was far from Premier League quality.
Appearing on BBC Sportscene on 1 March, Stewart was incredulous as he watched the footage unfold.
“I have no idea what Jefte is doing,” Stewart said. “He’s actually tucking inside, making it easier for Sparrow to get the ball.
You can see it when he turns and twists, looking in all the wrong directions. We’ve seen this countless times this season – defensively, he has no instinct. That’s just criminal.”
Barry Ferguson’s Frustration at Ibrox
Given his success at Rangers as a player, Ferguson must be in disbelief over the performances of some players currently in the squad.
If you look closely, it’s clear that at least half the players don’t meet the standard required to wear the iconic blue shirt.
Looking at the team’s attacking output, Jefte’s lack of contribution in the final third has also raised questions, leaving fans wondering why he is still being picked.
Ridvan Yilmaz, who is fit and available, has been forced to play out of position at right-back or off the bench, rarely featuring in his preferred left-back role.
With ongoing transfer speculation linking him to Turkey, Yilmaz needs to be trusted soon, or Rangers will be left with Jefte as their only left-back option.
At this stage, it’s clear: Jefte is not good enough. It’s time for a tough decision to be made this summer.
