‘Unacceptable’ – Wolves ace faces extra punishment after red card vs Bournemouth, ex-referee says
Wolves were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday after a penalty shootout loss to fellow Premier League side AFC Bournemouth. The match ended 1-1 in normal time, but Bournemouth ultimately triumphed in the shootout.
Matheus Cunha put Wolves ahead with a goal before receiving a red card in extra time following a clash with Milos Kerkez.
Vitor Pereira’s side now look ahead to their league match against Everton next weekend, as they aim to move away from the relegation zone.
Wolves are currently 17th in the Premier League, just five points above 18th-place Ipswich Town with 11 games remaining.
Ex-Referee Criticizes Cunha’s Red Card
Cunha’s red card has drawn criticism from former referee Keith Hackett, who believes the forward’s behavior needs to be addressed.
Hackett called Cunha’s actions “totally unacceptable” and stated that they harm the reputation of the game.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett said: “The first question to ask is how will his manager and Wolves deal with their employee? He clearly needs to attend a course to improve his behavior.
The FA have had a busy weekend, and the fine and suspension must be appropriate, considering his previous disciplinary record.”
The 25-year-old Cunha has been a key figure for Wolves since joining in 2023, scoring 31 goals in 85 appearances across all competitions, including 15 this season. He’s previously played for FC Sion, RB Leipzig, Hertha Berlin, and Atletico Madrid.
What’s Next for Wolves?
Wolves will be eager to bounce back from their FA Cup exit as they face Everton at home next weekend, hoping to put more distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
After the loss to Bournemouth, Pereira reflected on the difficulties his team faced, citing multiple injuries and yellow cards that hampered their performance.
“It was a very tough game with a lot of limitations, injury issues, yellow cards, and facing a team that was physically strong,” Pereira said.
“We competed until the last minute, until the last penalty. In the end, I’m proud of my team.”
Pereira also addressed Cunha’s red card, acknowledging the emotional and physical toll the match had on the player. “Matheus is a special player.
He played extra time despite being unfit, having had a hamstring issue over the past three weeks.
The emotional pressure was very high—not only on the pitch but from the bench and the stands as well.”
