Matheus Cunha has been hit with a disciplinary charge by the Football Association following his red card in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth last weekend.
The Brazilian forward was sent off after grabbing Bournemouth’s left-back Milos Kerkez by the neck, before appearing to punch, kick, and headbutt him.
The incident occurred in the 119th minute of the match, just after Cunha had equalised in normal time to send the game into extra time.
Referee Sam Barrott issued Cunha a straight red card, ruling him out of Wolves’ next three Premier League matches against Everton, Southampton, and West Ham.
Cunha had previously been banned for two matches earlier this season after a clash with an Ipswich Town staff member.
The FA has now taken further action, with a statement confirming: “Matheus Cunha has been charged following the FA Cup tie between Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, 1 March.
It’s alleged that the forward acted in an improper manner around the 121st minute of the fixture after his dismissal. Matheus Cunha has until Monday, 10 March, to provide a response.”
Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has acknowledged the impact of Cunha’s absence on the team. “Matheus is a special player,” Pereira said.
“In this game, the emotional side was very high, not only on the pitch but on the bench and in the stands—everywhere, there was a lot of pressure. In the end, what can happen in football, happened. It shouldn’t have, but it does.
“Don’t ask me about it because I was focused on the other side. In the end, the referee made his decision with the red card.
Of course, it means one less player, one less specialist in penalties, and we’ll miss him in the next games, but ultimately we’ll start the next match against Everton with 11 players, and that’s the most important thing for me.”
