Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder acknowledges that “a little bit of luck” will play a role in deciding who secures the Championship’s two automatic promotion spots in the 2024-25 season.
For the second time in seven years, the Blades and their Yorkshire rivals, Leeds United, are in the thick of an intense battle for Premier League promotion, with the exciting conclusion to the campaign bringing back memories of the 2018-19 season.
That season featured plenty of drama, with Leeds suffering a setback during Easter 2019 when they lost back-to-back matches, allowing Sheffield United to capitalize with a six-point swing, leapfrogging them into second place.
The Blades eventually finished just behind Norwich City, who went on to win the league.
At the time, Norwich was managed by Daniel Farke, now the manager of Leeds, who was aiming for his third promotion and second-tier title.
Leeds had a crucial psychological boost with a win at Bramall Lane on February 24, but last weekend brought more drama when Farke’s side dropped points in a 1-1 draw at home against West Brom.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United took advantage, securing a 2-1 victory at QPR.
This result saw Leeds’ lead at the top reduced to three points, while third-placed Burnley played their game in hand against Cardiff on Tuesday, still eight points behind the leaders.
Sunderland remain outsiders in the race for automatic promotion.
Wilder, whose team will face Preston – managed by former Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom – on Saturday before hosting Bristol City on Tuesday, stated: “The players need to be bold, and we as staff need to be too in what we do.
We must also be pragmatic at times. Accumulating points and experience will be crucial, and a little bit of luck will play its part as well.
“Togetherness is essential, and the support from everyone will be key, as well as keeping the team fit and healthy. That will require some luck, because injuries can be incredibly unfortunate.
I don’t think anyone will win all of their remaining matches, but it’s possible that someone could win eight or nine, and that’s happened before.”
