“Kasper Schmeichel Reveals the TRUE Hero Behind Leicester City’s Premier League Title Victory
Leicester City’s incredible Premier League title win in 2016 is a story that will be told for generations.
The previous season, Leicester were fighting relegation, and when Claudio Ranieri took over from Nigel Pearson in 2015, many expected them to be one of the teams heading down. But against all odds, Ranieri’s side defied expectations, finishing at the top of the table, above some of the wealthiest clubs in world football.
Leicester lost just three games that season, ending 10 points clear of second-place Arsenal and 11 ahead of third-place Tottenham Hotspur.
While Jamie Vardy took the spotlight as the top scorer and Riyad Mahrez earned the PFA Player of the Year award, Kasper Schmeichel believes neither was the most crucial player that season.
Kasper Schmeichel names N’Golo Kanté as the most important player
In an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, former Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel revealed that N’Golo Kanté was the most important player during their title-winning campaign.
When asked who the standout player was that season, Schmeichel responded, “It would’ve been N’Golo, I think.”
He recalled a specific moment in a game against Swansea City: “We were 3-0 up, and he wins the ball back near our left-hand corner. Within 30 seconds, he’s up in the right-hand corner, and you’re thinking, that’s just ridiculous. His engine was ridiculous. It was like having an extra player.”
Kanté’s rise to global stardom
After the 2016 season, Kanté moved to Chelsea in the summer and went on to achieve even greater success. The French midfielder won back-to-back Premier League titles with Chelsea, alongside a Champions League, Europa League, and multiple domestic trophies, solidifying his place as one of the best midfielders in the world.
Kanté also added a World Cup title to his impressive collection in 2018 and came close to winning the Ballon d’Or in 2021.
He may very well be the most decorated former Leicester player, alongside Riyad Mahrez.
