Is There Anything More Unstoppable Than Rangers After the Europa League Anthem Plays on Thursday Night?
Despite their ongoing struggles domestically, Rangers are now on the verge of reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League, following a 3-1 victory over Fenerbahçe at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
The Gers have a flawless record of winning all 21 two-legged European ties after claiming an away victory in the first leg.
With that in mind, Rangers fans will be confident of progressing to a last-eight clash with either Athletic Club or Roma.
While goalkeeper Jack Butland made some important saves and Mohamed Diomande delivered a commanding performance, it was midfielder Nicolas Raskin, whose display was described as “unbelievable” by Rangers legend Ally McCoist during TNT Sports’ commentary, who stood out.
However, it’s the attacking players who deserve particular attention.
Václav Černý Shines Against Mourinho’s Side
Václav Černý was undoubtedly the standout performer in Thursday night’s victory in Istanbul, scoring twice.
The Czech international restored Rangers’ lead just before half-time, calmly finishing past İrfan Can Eğribayat after a clever link-up with Cyriel Dessers.
He then netted the crucial third goal nine minutes from time, being perfectly set up by Raskin on the counter-attack.
Černý’s performances for Rangers this season have been described as “outstanding,” with former striker Kris Boyd remarking on Sky Sports, “Where would Rangers be if it wasn’t for him?”
Already having scored twice against Steaua București, as well as goals against Nice and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, Černý has now netted six goals in UEFA competition this season.
His tally of eight goals and assists combined in this year’s Europa League ranks second only to Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.
Moreover, Rangers’ 11 goals on the road in the competition is the second-highest total, just behind Olympique Lyonnais, with four of those coming in their victory at Ibrox in October.
Cyriel Dessers Enjoys His Best Performance for Rangers
Another Rangers attacker earning praise is Cyriel Dessers, who, according to Scottish football analyst John Walker, put in his “best match for Rangers” on Thursday.
Dessers received a 9/10 rating from the Scotsman and was a key figure in the attack.
The Nigerian striker broke the deadlock just six minutes into the match, rounding the goalkeeper before his shot just about crossed the line, despite a strong challenge from Çağlar Söyüncü.
The goal was confirmed after the referee’s watch signaled it, sending the travelling Rangers supporters into jubilation.
Dessers then turned provider, delivering a perfectly timed reverse pass to set up Černý for the second goal.
He had two other goals ruled out for marginal offside calls in the second half—if he’d been a bit smaller, he might have completed a hat-trick.
With both Černý and Dessers in form, Rangers’ European run is looking stronger than ever as they approach the quarter-finals.
