Rangers Soar to 3-1 Advantage Over Fenerbahce, But Deeney Warns the Tie Is Far From Over
Rangers are flying high after another impressive European performance that saw them raise their game on the continent.
The 3-1 victory over Fenerbahce puts them in a strong position ahead of the second leg at Ibrox, providing a much-needed confidence boost for Barry Ferguson and his squad.
Although Ferguson’s side could have added even more goals during the March 6th clash in Istanbul, they will head back to Glasgow with a comfortable 3-1 aggregate lead.
Their solid defending and ability to frustrate Jose Mourinho’s team were key factors in the win.
Deeney Warns: Fenerbahce Tie Is Far From Decided
Despite the positive result, Mourinho has made it clear that the tie is not over, and Rangers are fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead in the second leg at Ibrox on March 13th.
Troy Deeney, speaking live on talkSPORT (March 7th), warned that Fenerbahce will still be a major threat.
The former striker highlighted that while Fenerbahce missed opportunities in the second half of the home leg, they will be more dangerous in the return fixture.
“I don’t disagree that Rangers will score, but Jack Butland made two fantastic saves to keep them in the game,” Deeney said. “I’m not suggesting Rangers were lucky—they played really well.
But next time, I expect Fenerbahce to convert more than one from seven chances.”
Deeney also pointed out that Rangers cannot afford to allow crosses into the box for Edin Dzeko to attack. “Saint-Maximin was putting in a lot of balls, and you can’t let Dzeko get those opportunities. He’ll be better next time.”
Rangers Face Tough Defensive Challenge in the Second Leg
One thing is clear for the second leg next Thursday: Fenerbahce will come out fighting.
Their disappointing performance in Istanbul surprised even their own national media, but they still have a star-studded and experienced lineup that could prove dangerous.
Dzeko, a player with proven class, will be eager to get on the scoresheet in the return match. Fenerbahce realistically needs to score first to have any chance of advancing to the quarterfinals.
Rangers will again face a tough defensive test, much like in the first leg.
Ferguson may opt to push higher up the pitch, defending further up and playing on the counter after sitting deep in Istanbul.
Fenerbahce were wasteful, converting just one goal from 23 shots, but with Butland and his defenders in top form, they managed to stay resolute.
However, they’ll be cautious about how much pressure they allow from Rangers in the second leg.
