Ipswich Manager Kieran McKenna Calls Loss to Crystal Palace “Sickening” After Late Goal
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna described his side’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace as “sickening,” after they fell short in a crucial match at Selhurst Park.
Ismaila Sarr’s goal in the 82nd minute sealed the victory for Palace, with both teams struggling to capitalize on several scoring opportunities throughout the match.
The loss was another setback for Ipswich, who remain in a perilous position near the relegation zone as their chances to turn things around grow slimmer.
“It was a really competitive game, and I think we played our part in that,” McKenna reflected.
“We had just as many opportunities as Palace did, and we certainly felt we deserved a goal. We came really close on a couple of occasions to getting the first goal.
“It’s a sickening result, especially after being so competitive away from home against a strong Palace side.
We know we have to keep working to turn these margins in our favour. It’s been the story of the season, but that’s the only way forward.”
England manager Thomas Tuchel watched from the stands as the match began with plenty of action.
Eddie Nketiah, filling in for the injured Jean-Philippe Mateta, had an early chance for Palace, while Ipswich’s Jaden Philogene also tested goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
The game fizzled out in the first half but picked up after the break. Palace eventually broke the deadlock when Sarr chipped the ball over Ipswich keeper Alex Palmer to net his side’s only goal of the match.
Sarr celebrated by mimicking Mateta’s signature corner-flag kick, a tribute to his teammate who is recovering from an ear injury sustained during their FA Cup win over Millwall.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner praised his side’s patience in securing the win: “It was a tough game, and we knew it would be because Ipswich have been performing well.
I think the results haven’t always reflected their performances. The game went as we expected, and although we missed several chances, we kept waiting for our moment. And when it came, we scored an amazing goal from Ismaila.
“His celebration shows the great spirit in the group and the fantastic togetherness and character we have,” Glasner added.
Palace will now head to Marbella for a warm-weather training camp and a friendly against Norwegian side HamKam, before returning to England for their FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham.
“We’re in a good moment, both individually and as a team,” Glasner said. “Now we just need to stay humble and keep working.
With only two-and-a-half months left in the season, we need as many points as possible, and we’ll need to be at our best to beat Fulham in the FA Cup.”
