Rangers legend Ally McCoist has weighed in on the speculation surrounding the club’s managerial future, suggesting an intriguing possibility for a former boss to return.
Rangers Managerial Rumours
The coming months could see significant activity at Rangers, with 49ers Enterprises agreeing to a deal in principle to take over ownership at Ibrox.
The club also faces the task of appointing a permanent manager following the departure of Philippe Clement.
For now, former captain Barry Ferguson has stepped in as interim manager until the season’s end, and his impressive 3-1 win against Fenerbahce in the Europa League has boosted his chances of landing the role permanently.
With that victory, Rangers now head into the second leg of their Europa League last-16 tie with a solid lead. Ferguson’s name is being considered for the full-time managerial position, but there are other candidates in the frame.
Kilmarnock’s Derek McInnes and former Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner have both been mentioned as potential options.
There are also reports suggesting that Rangers, alongside the 49ers, may have identified Rafael Benitez as their preferred choice.
Steven Gerrard, who guided Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title four years ago, has also been linked with a return. Now, McCoist has added fuel to the fire regarding the possibility of Gerrard’s comeback.
McCoist’s Thoughts on Gerrard’s Potential Return Speaking to Football Insider, McCoist revealed he had heard that Gerrard might be considering a return to Glasgow.
“I’ve heard the talk about Steven Gerrard coming back,” McCoist said. “He’s currently out of work, but I’m not sure what his situation is at the moment.
One possible issue could be him needing to stay out of the country for tax reasons.”
Gerrard, who favours an attacking 4-3-3 formation, shares the same Wasserman agency as Rangers players John Souttar and Danilo.
Along with Gerrard, McCoist also pointed to Kevin Muscat as an interesting candidate. “Another name that caught my attention is Kevin Muscat, especially as his team is striving to qualify for the Asian Champions League, though they’re facing challenges.
He’s been very successful, having won a League Cup double in China.”
Since leaving Scotland in November 2021, Gerrard has faced difficulties at both Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, with a relatively low points average at both clubs—1.18 points per game at Villa and 1.33 in Saudi Arabia.
After parting ways with Al-Ettifaq in January, Gerrard remains without a job, which could make him an appealing option for Rangers, making it a situation to monitor closely.
