“Very Lucky”- Lee Hendrie instantly reacts to Leeds v Portsmouth controversy
Leeds United head into the break level with Portsmouth, but the scoreline comes with some controversy.
The first 45 minutes have seen very few chances for the Whites, with John Mousinho’s side doing well to keep the Championship leaders at bay. Portsmouth has looked dangerous on the counter, and this is something Daniel Farke will need to address during the break if Leeds are to come away with three points.
However, there’s a strong argument that Leeds should have had the chance to take the lead after an incident that left Lee Hendrie stunned at Fratton Park.
Hendrie Reacts to Leeds United’s Penalty Appeal Against Portsmouth
It’s been far from an ideal first half for Leeds, with both sides struggling to create many clear-cut chances. Joel Piroe had a great opportunity in the 38th minute, but Nicolas Schmid’s double save kept the score level.
Despite this, Farke could justifiably complain that his side should have had a penalty earlier in the half. Matt Ritchie attempted to clear the ball but ended up taking out Dan James inside the area, with little to no contact on the ball.
Hendrie, reacting live on Sky Sports Football, clearly felt the decision was wrong. “Is there a swipe out here? I tell you what, Ritchie is very, very lucky. Rob Jones had a really good view of that. For me, that’s a penalty,” Hendrie said.
Leeds United Unlucky in First Half at Fratton Park
It’s hard to argue that Leeds should have had a penalty in the first half, a moment that could have influenced the final result.
Ritchie clearly made contact with James, taking him down inside the 12-yard box, yet referee Rob Jones didn’t award the penalty, despite having a clear view of the incident.
Leeds were nearly able to make up for that decision when Piroe had another chance to score, but Schmid’s brilliant double save kept the score at 0-0. It’s safe to say that, while the game remains goalless at the break, it probably shouldn’t be.
