“Good News: Reported €50m deal not happening as Chelsea now have a younger, better than Denzel Dumfries for free
Chelsea’s ongoing links to right-backs persist, despite the club already having two senior options and one highly promising young player in the position.
It could be because Reece James’ fitness remains a concern, or perhaps Enzo Maresca sees him more as a midfielder and plans to utilize him in that role. Alternatively, it might be due to Malo Gusto’s struggles to match the promise he showed in his first few months. And as we saw with disappointment yesterday, Josh Acheampong hasn’t been given a chance, even when both James and Gusto are unavailable.
Regardless, it appears those in charge are still keen to add more depth at right-back, with CaughtOffside reporting that long-term target Denzel Dumfries remains on their radar. Chelsea were heavily linked with the Inter Milan defender back in 2022, but since then, the connection has been relatively quiet.
Finances Make Dumfries Deal Unlikely for Chelsea
Now, Inter is reportedly asking for €50m for Dumfries, which seems unrealistic for the financially cautious Blues. While the club might be willing to break their spending rules for an exceptional talent or a bargain, Dumfries, at 28 and €50m, fits neither category.
While we can’t completely rule out the possibility, this move feels out of step with Chelsea’s current direction, and it seems more like an agent trying to boost their client’s profile—especially considering Inter doesn’t seem eager to hold on to him.
Dumfries recently signed a new deal in November and remains a regular starter for the Italian giants, so he’s not going anywhere on the cheap. Given the price, this move doesn’t seem like one Chelsea would pursue.
