“Truly EXCEPTIONAL compared to the others” – Micah Richards names the Leeds United player who has IMPRESSED him the most this season.
Micah Richards has expressed surprise after Leeds United’s unbeaten streak in the Championship came to an abrupt end with a 1-0 loss to Portsmouth on Sunday.
Leeds suffered their first Championship defeat since November when Colby Bishop’s 61st-minute goal handed Portsmouth all three points at Fratton Park on March 9.
The loss was unexpected, especially after Leeds had recently defeated Watford, Sunderland, and Sheffield United in their previous four matches.
With a draw against West Brom last weekend, Leeds have seen their lead at the top of the table slip, allowing Sheffield United to draw level on points, while Burnley has closed the gap to just two points.
Richards praised Dan James and acknowledged Ao Tanaka’s contributions in midfield.
Reflecting on Leeds’ recent form, Richards pointed out that they will be frustrated by allowing Portsmouth to break their impressive run and lose their advantage at the top.
“Leeds have been on an incredible run,” Richards said on the Rest is Football podcast (March 10).
“They won 4-0 against Watford, beat Sunderland, and then went to Sheffield United and won 3-1 with some late goals. Then you’re thinking, ‘Can they keep it going against West Brom at home?’”
“They drew that one, then lost to Portsmouth despite creating plenty of chances.
They’ll be kicking themselves because, when you look at their squad, the options they have off the bench, and their style of play… Dan James has been outstanding this season, no doubt. And Tanaka in midfield has been really good.”
James has been in excellent form for Leeds this season, and it’s no surprise Richards has singled him out.
The Wales international has scored 10 goals and provided 9 assists in 30 Championship appearances, making him a key player in Leeds’ push for promotion.
Farke will be hoping James can continue his strong performances in the remaining matches of the season, with Leeds aiming to secure automatic promotion without needing the playoffs.
Although James hasn’t scored in the last four league games, he’ll be eager to get back on the scoresheet when Leeds face Millwall at Elland Road on March 12.
