Bad News; Leeds United v Millwall halted, player can ‘barely walk’ in crushing injury blow as Referee has to urge him off the pitch
Leeds United were left stunned by Portsmouth on Sunday, but they aimed to bounce back with a win against Millwall at Elland Road just three days later.
The Whites made the perfect start on 12 March, as Manor Solomon’s cross deflected into the net within the first three minutes, continuing his knack for scoring early goals to give Leeds the advantage.
However, as the first half drew to a close with Leeds leading 1-0, there was concern when a player had to be substituted after struggling to walk off the field.
Leeds United v Millwall halted for injury
Leeds are determined to return to the Premier League, and manager Daniel Farke will have been hoping to avoid more setbacks due to injuries, especially after making one change to his lineup—Ilia Gruev was replaced by Joe Rothwell.
Millwall, realistically, are unlikely to mount a serious push for the playoffs, given their mid-table position, but stranger things have happened in the Championship.
Their efforts were dealt a blow in the 26th minute at Elland Road when midfielder George Honeyman went down injured and had to be replaced by Billy Mitchell. According to Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post, Honeyman could “barely walk” as he was escorted off the pitch by manager Alex Neil.
“Honeyman trudging off injured. I say trudging, he’s barely walking at all,” Smyth tweeted. “Referee has to urge him off the pitch. Millwall’s sub wasn’t ready… Billy Mitchell comes on.”
End of Millwall’s dominance at Elland Road
Leeds have not suffered many defeats this season, but they had already lost twice to Millwall before their midweek encounter at Elland Road. Millwall had triumphed 1-0 in the earlier Championship meeting at The Den and secured a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup at Elland Road last month.
Despite Leeds’ dominance in the first half, the game was far from over, as Millwall’s manager, Alex Neil, had seen his side come from behind to beat Watford the previous weekend.
However, Farke’s team managed to secure the win and keep their promotion hopes alive, moving them back on track at the top of the table.
Next up for Leeds is a trip to Queens Park Rangers on 15 March, before the international break, which Farke might not be too pleased with at this stage of the season.
