"Keith Hackett SHOCKED by Howard Webb's DEFENSE of Controversial Everton Decision. What will be the possible outcome?

Keith Hackett has criticized Howard Webb for defending VAR after the controversial incident in Everton’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

The match on February 22 at Goodison Park saw Everton’s Ashley Young being clearly tugged in the final seconds, causing an outcry. Initially, referee Andy Madeley awarded a penalty for a foul by Matthijs De Ligt. However, VAR suggested it should be overturned, despite limited footage, a decision Webb believes was still the right one.

Hackett, speaking exclusively to Goodison News, expressed his disbelief at Webb’s defense of the decision. The former FIFA referee and PGMOL chief emphasized that Webb’s role is to acknowledge mistakes and learn from them.

“I am completely baffled that a penalty, which was clearly deserved, wasn’t given,” Hackett said. “The referee and VAR got it wrong. How can Webb claim the decision was correct when De Ligt committed the foul?”

Hackett pointed out that referees, being human, will make mistakes, but Webb, with his experience, should recognize and admit those errors.

“It was a clear holding offense by De Ligt, which should have resulted in a penalty,” Hackett continued. “Failing to address such issues appropriately doesn’t help progress the standards of refereeing.”

On a positive note for Everton, their recent form under David Moyes has eased their relegation fears, with safety nearly confirmed.

Had the penalty decision been overturned in a more precarious situation, it could have led to significant unrest.

While Manchester United struggles, with Everton closing the gap on them, Webb’s continued defense of such decisions could ultimately erode trust in his leadership within the Premier League.
