Nelson Semedo, a key player for Wolverhampton Wanderers, may be set to leave the club at the end of the season, with reports suggesting that he could return to Benfica once his contract expires in the summer.
Semedo, who has made over 150 Premier League appearances for Wolves, scored just once in the top-flight – a goal against Manchester United on the final day of his debut season in 2020/21.
The right-back began his career at Benfica, joining the club at just 18 and spending two years there before making the move to Barcelona.
During his time at the Catalan club, Semedo made over 100 appearances, honing his skills alongside some of the world’s top talents.
His next move came as a surprise, when he joined Wolves for £37 million, a deal that was seen as a major coup for the club.
After five successful years in the Black Country, however, reports now suggest that Semedo could be heading for the exit.
Reports: Semedo ‘Likely’ to Return to Benfica
According to Molineux News, Semedo is increasingly likely to return to Benfica this summer, with his contract at Wolves set to expire.
The Portugal international, who has extensive experience in the Premier League, La Liga, and the Champions League, was named Wolves captain earlier this season following Mario Lemina’s fallout with the club.
His leadership was seen as crucial in helping steer Wolves away from relegation.
Despite Vitor Pereira’s desire to keep Semedo at Wolves, it appears that the 29-year-old will move on after nearly five years at the club.
A return to Benfica seems increasingly likely, especially with his contract situation giving him full control over his next move.
Former Wolves manager Bruno Lage, now at Benfica, has spoken positively about the prospect of Semedo returning to the Portuguese club, having previously managed him at Wolves.
Journalist Graeme Bailey has indicated that Semedo’s potential move to Benfica is genuine, noting:
“Semedo has had a fantastic time at Wolves, though he’s been somewhat undervalued. The links to Benfica are real, and he’s likely to leave.
Semedo has always shown respect for Wolves, and the club’s strong relationship with Portuguese players, as seen with Ruben Neves, will likely be the same with Semedo.”
