Wolves travel to Southampton this Saturday in a crucial Premier League match, with both sides battling near the bottom of the table.
Last weekend, Wolves played out a 1-1 draw with Everton, with Marshall Munetsi scoring his first goal for the club, helping them maintain a six-point cushion over 18th-placed Ipswich Town.
This week, Vitor Pereira’s side will be aiming for all three points against Southampton, who have struggled throughout the season with just nine points to their name. Anything less than a win would be seen as a missed opportunity for Wolves, especially given Southampton’s current form.
Meanwhile, Ivan Juric’s Ipswich Town seem all but doomed after a disastrous 2024/25 campaign, with the club on track to potentially break Derby County’s infamous record of just 11 points in a single Premier League season, set in 2007/08.
Given this, Wolves will feel confident heading into this match, and Paul Merson has shared his prediction for the encounter.
In his Sportskeeda column, Merson predicted a 1-0 victory for Wolves, stating: “Wolves should stay up by default – Leicester and Ipswich can’t win games anyway! If Wolves win here, I think it all but secures their Premier League status for another season. But if they don’t get three points, the game against Ipswich next month could turn into a direct relegation decider.”
“Southampton have been dreadful all season, but I still can’t fully trust Wolves to get the win here. They’ll be without Matheus Cunha, who’s been their key player, and I’m not sure how effective they can be going forward without him. I’ll pick Wolves, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it ends in a draw.”
Joe Cole, however, remains optimistic about Wolves’ survival chances. Despite their recent struggles, both Leicester and Ipswich continue to lose, which has kept Wolves above the relegation zone for now.
Cole, speaking after Wolves’ draw with Everton, said: “At this stage of the season, any point that keeps you ahead of the teams below you is valuable, and I think Wolves are playing well enough to stay up. For the league’s sake, and for the neutral fans, it’s nice to have a close race at the bottom, but that depends on what the other teams do. I think Wolves will keep doing what they’re doing, pick up a few more results, and stay up by the end of the season.”
