Regardless of how Ipswich Town’s season unfolds by the end of the tough Premier League campaign, several key players could soon be on their way out in search of more glamorous opportunities elsewhere.
Liam Delap stands out as the most obvious candidate.
The former Manchester City striker, who has impressed with ten goals in the top flight this season, is reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Newcastle United.
With his market value now at an eye-watering £40m, a move away from Portman Road seems inevitable.
This would be a huge profit for Ipswich, considering they only signed Delap for £20m last summer, potentially making his departure the most expensive in the club’s history.
Ipswich has seen this before when it comes to cashing in on a promising talent.
While manager Kieran McKenna and the club’s staff may feel the sting of losing another key player, they’ve always managed to bounce back, as they have in the past.
Notable Sales in Ipswich’s Recent History
Many of Ipswich’s biggest sales in recent years occurred when they were struggling in the EFL, with figures like £40m being unimaginable while competing in the depths of the Championship and League One.
Still, Ipswich would have been pleased with their business when they sold centre-back Tyrone Mings to AFC Bournemouth for £8m in 2015.
The club had picked up Mings for just £10k in 2012, after spotting his potential while he was at non-league Chippenham Town.
Ipswich has also made substantial profits by selling other promising players, like Connor Wickham, who moved to Sunderland for around £8.1m in 2012 after scoring 15 goals in 72 appearances for the club.
Delap could soon exceed that figure before moving on to new challenges, but he isn’t the only standout player in McKenna’s current squad who could bring in a significant sum.
Leif Davis: Ipswich’s Next Big Sale?
McKenna has continued to rely on several players who have been with the club since their League One days, such as Sam Morsy, Nathan Broadhead, and Conor Chaplin.
However, one player who has truly stood out since making the jump to the Premier League is Leif Davis.
The £1m deal to bring in the ex-Leeds United full-back is looking more like a stroke of genius with each passing game.
Davis has been exceptional, contributing 48 goals and assists in 117 games, including four in the Premier League this season.
Thanks to his consistent performances, Davis’ transfer value has skyrocketed.
The 25-year-old is now valued at a staggering £21m by Transfermarkt, an increase of 2000% from the £1m Ipswich paid for him.
Just last November, his value stood at £12.5m, and it continues to rise.
This makes Davis Ipswich’s biggest asset after Delap, and losing both players in one summer would be a massive blow to the club.
While Ipswich will be relieved that Davis signed a new deal in October 2024, they could still be powerless to resist if a top club comes in with a huge offer for the left-back.
