Rangers interim manager Barry Ferguson is confident his team is ready for the Old Firm derby, despite the physical demands of their midweek European exploits.
The Ibrox side made it to the Europa League quarter-finals with a hard-fought penalty shootout victory over Fenerbahce on Thursday. In contrast, Celtic have had a full week to prepare for today’s Scottish Premiership clash at Parkhead.
However, Ferguson made just one change to his starting XI, dismissing any concerns about fatigue.
“It didn’t factor into our decision-making at all,” he said. “The players are professionals and are well taken care of. On Friday, they had a recovery session, and then we had a light session yesterday. They’re all fit and ready to go. I’m really looking forward to the game.”
The only change sees Ridvan Yilmaz replace Jefte, who is absent from the squad due to personal reasons.
“It’s a private matter, and we’ll keep it confidential for now. That’s why Jefte isn’t involved,” Ferguson explained. “As for Ridvan, he’s been excellent when he’s filled in at right-back or right wing-back, even though he’s been out of position. Today, he’ll move into his natural role.”
Rangers are hoping to break a difficult away record in this fixture, having failed to win any of the last eight meetings with Celtic. But Ferguson is confident his team is prepared to change that.
“It’s been too long,” he admitted. “It’s been eight games since we won here. We know it’s a tough place to play, but we are ready. We’ve prepared properly, and we have a clear approach to the game.”
“We need to be aggressive, take the game to them, and that’s how we plan to play.”
