“Unacceptable”- Patrick Roberts makes ‘unacceptable’ Sunderand admission with clear run-in target set

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance in their 3-0 loss to Coventry City, but remains confident that the squad will regroup after the international break. Haji Wright’s hat-trick at the CBS Arena handed the Black Cats a tough defeat in the final match before the March international break.

Reflecting on the loss, Roberts said: “At this stage of the season, it’s critical to maintain momentum and rhythm, but we were far from that today. We knew it would be a difficult game, but conceding two goals like that is unacceptable. From a player’s perspective, it’s simply not good enough.”

“We have to regroup, take this break as a positive, and remember that we’ve had some good results in the past. Overall, though, it’s been disappointing by our standards and expectations. The fans came to support us, and we let them down with that performance. We know that.”

Roberts continued: “We need to use these two weeks to pick ourselves up. There are still plenty of games left, and we can’t ignore that. We need to finish the season strong, find a rhythm, and learn from this game. It’s one we can’t forget, and we’ll work to put things right.”

“I’ve had my share of tough games in my career, and some of the lads have too. It’s hard to take right now, but we all understand the frustration. We know the fans are upset, and we feel the same way. The manager is frustrated too, but that’s part of football. You work hard in training, give your best in the games, and sometimes it just doesn’t happen. We know this performance wasn’t good enough.”

Roberts also acknowledged the disappointment felt by the travelling supporters: “Football is emotional, and the fans will always be there, even when players come and go. We understand their frustration, and we truly appreciate their support.”

He concluded: “I’ll bring my experience to help us refocus. The fans have been with us all season, and we’ll learn from this loss. We won’t forget it, and we’ll use it to push on in the critical weeks ahead.”
