Wolves are on course for Premier League safety, and Toti Gomes has played a significant role in their recent improvement.
Their 2-1 win over Southampton at St. Mary’s on Saturday saw them extend their lead to nine points above the relegation zone, with Alan Shearer confidently declaring that the relegation battle is now over for Wolves.
The situation is looking positive for the team, but Vitor Pereira was cautious after the win, urging his players to remain focused and finish the job.
In the past couple of months, Wolves have shown significant progress under Pereira, with several players improving under his management.
Toti Gomes is one of those who has flourished since the Portuguese manager’s arrival, despite a rocky start to his Wolves career.
Initially, Toti struggled alongside Yerson Mosquera in a back four, with Troy Deeney even labeling him a ‘car crash’ following their opening-day loss to Arsenal.
7However, the switch to a back three, where Toti played on the left side, seemed to suit him better, and he has been key to Wolves’ recent success.
Under Pereira, Wolves have played 13 Premier League matches, with Toti featuring in eight of them. In those eight games, Wolves collected 16 points and kept four clean sheets.
In contrast, the five matches Toti missed saw Wolves pick up just one point.
This has led to the belief that Toti might be Pereira’s most important player.
Given his pivotal role, it’s hard to understand why Toti was overlooked for a call-up to Portugal’s national team for the current international break.
While Roberto Martinez selected Wolves teammates Jose Sa and Nelson Semedo, Toti was left out despite his outstanding form.
With two caps for Portugal, Toti could be forgiven for feeling frustrated by the snub, especially after his excellent performances.
However, given his down-to-earth nature, he will likely take the decision in stride and focus on his training at Compton Park.
Vitor Pereira has expressed his appreciation for Toti’s contributions, particularly his ability to offer balance to the team.
Pereira explained: “It’s the left foot, which is important for us. Playing on the left side with a left foot gives us balance.
If you play with your right foot on the opposite side, there are problems. Toti’s left foot gives us cover, and that’s crucial for us.”
While it’s reported that Martinez is a fan of Toti, something apparently prevented him from selecting him this time.
From a Wolves perspective, however, the £900,000 signing can now focus on getting ready for the remainder of the season.
