Leeds United sold what were arguably their three standout players from last season to Premier League clubs last summer.
Homegrown talent Archie Gray made the move to Tottenham Hotspur. Crysencio Summerville, fresh off being named Championship Player of the Year, secured a transfer to West Ham.
Meanwhile, Georginio Rutter, the creative force behind Daniel Farke’s system, joined Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported £35 million.
For the former Leeds trio, their Premier League experiences have been mixed so far.
Gray, the award-winning midfielder, has impressed at Spurs, often standing out despite Ange Postecoglou’s tactical approach. His versatility has been evident as he’s performed admirably, even when played out of position at centre-back.
On the other hand, Summerville has struggled to make an impact at West Ham, with just one goal and one assist in 19 appearances. A thigh injury has limited his appearances in 2025.
Rutter, however, has found a consistent rhythm at Brighton, excelling in a well-organized system under one of the Premier League’s most stable clubs. Unlike Summerville, he has been able to deliver solid performances week in and week out.
Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola has been quick to praise Rutter’s role at Brighton, often referring to him with admiration.
“They are so good,” Guardiola said when discussing the team’s overachievement this season. “When they link up with Rutter and Joao Pedro, they’re fantastic players. It’s a fantastic team.”
At £35 million, Rutter is Brighton’s most expensive signing to date, surpassing their usual cut-price acquisitions.
So far, with eight goals and four assists in all competitions, his contributions have been solid, though not necessarily spectacular. His value, however, extends beyond just stats.
Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler believes Rutter has proven his ability to adapt to the Premier League.
After a standout performance in Brighton’s FA Cup win over Chelsea, Hurzeler highlighted Rutter’s intensity and resilience, especially in personal duels, an area where he consistently excels.
“He can play with great intensity and is resilient in one-on-one situations,” Hurzeler said. “Against Chelsea, he won most of his duels, and that’s why I’m pleased with him.”
In a tough match at Manchester City, Rutter continued to showcase his ability to influence games.
While he was caught in possession before Manchester City’s first goal, he quickly redeemed himself by winning a free-kick that led to Brighton’s equalizer.
Rutter’s performances, especially against top-tier talent, demonstrate his growing influence in the Premier League.
Now, the challenge for Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville is to consistently replicate similar performances in their respective teams.
