Ipswich Town and manager Kieran McKenna are reportedly targeting a versatile 6ft 6 midfielder who could potentially replace loanee Kalvin Phillips.
Ipswich Town Fighting Relegation as Phillips Update Surfaces
Ipswich Town find themselves in serious danger of immediate relegation from the Premier League, sitting in the relegation zone with 10 games without a win in the top flight.
Their 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Portman Road was compounded by a Wolves victory over Southampton, widening the gap to nine points at the bottom.
Following the loss, McKenna acknowledged the challenge, saying, “There’s a significant gap now, but we can only focus on ourselves.
We’ve got two crucial games after the international break, and we need to be fully prepared to compete.”
He added, “It’s still possible with six points available after the break, but we are running out of time. We need to start picking up points, but we will keep fighting until the very last game.”
Kalvin Phillips’ Future Uncertain
Should Ipswich be relegated, several players may look for new clubs, including Kalvin Phillips, who is currently on loan from Manchester City.
Reports suggest Ipswich are unlikely to make Phillips’ loan move permanent, as he has reportedly agreed verbally to join Leeds United should they secure promotion.
Man City are said to be open to a £20m offer for Phillips, who has made 20 appearances for Ipswich this season.
In light of this, the club is reportedly on the lookout for a new holding midfielder.
Ipswich Eyeing Kalidou Sidibe
One player on Ipswich’s radar is Kalidou Sidibe, a 26-year-old midfielder from French club En Avant Guingamp.
Sidibe, who can also play as a central midfielder or centre-back, stands at 6ft 6 and is the tallest player in Ligue 2.
While Scottish giants Celtic have already made a £1.6m bid for the player, Ipswich, along with PSV Eindhoven, Grasshopper Zurich, and his former club Toulouse, are also said to be interested.
Sidibe, who joined Guingamp permanently in 2023, has been a key figure this season, making over 30 appearances and contributing two goals and five assists as a deep-lying midfielder.
If Ipswich are relegated, Sidibe’s imposing physical presence could be an asset in the Championship’s typically combative environment. However, with Celtic already pursuing him, Ipswich may need to act quickly if they wish to secure his services.
