Ipswich Town transfer news latest: Kalvin Phillips ‘replacement’ found as relegation could see Kieran McKenna lose stars
Ipswich Town are reportedly considering Kalidou Sidibe as a potential replacement for Kalvin Phillips, who may depart the club in the summer if they are relegated.
Kieran McKenna’s side entered the March international break sitting 18th in the Premier League, with only 17 points after a 4-2 loss to Nottingham Forest on March 15.
The team now finds itself nine points adrift of 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, and given their poor form, with eight defeats in their last 10 league matches, it seems unlikely that gap will be closed.
Should Ipswich face relegation, they could lose several key players, including midfielder Kalvin Phillips. However, according to Africa Foot, the club is targeting Kalidou Sidibe from French club Guingamp as a potential replacement.
Can Ipswich Beat Celtic to Sidibe?
Standing at six feet, six inches tall, Sidibe offers a physical presence either at the base of midfield or in a box-to-box role, which could provide Ipswich with a notable advantage.
It’s worth noting that the 26-year-old has spent his entire career in Ligue 2, which could make a move to the Championship an appealing option, as it might allow him to refine his skills and adjust to English football away from the pressures of the Premier League.
However, Ipswich will face stiff competition for his signature, with Celtic already having made a £1.6m bid for Sidibe.
PSV Eindhoven has also shown interest, and both Celtic and PSV can offer European football, which might make it challenging for McKenna to convince Sidibe to join.
Who Else Could Leave the Club?
Phillips, who is on loan from Manchester City, is unlikely to stay at Ipswich if other Premier League clubs come calling.
There is also a possibility that several other players could leave, with striker Liam Delap being heavily linked with moves to clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea.
Defender Jacob Greaves and attacker Omari Hutchinson have also caught the eye with their performances, despite the team’s struggles, and could attract interest if Ipswich is relegated.
Manager Kieran McKenna may also find himself in demand this summer, given his success in guiding the club from League One to the Premier League. If he were to leave, Ipswich would face a challenging situation heading into the 2025-26 season.
