Wolves Hit with Nightmare News About Star Who May Only Play Seven More Games for the Club
Wolves have gone from being on the brink of relegation to creating valuable distance between themselves and the teams in the bottom three.
On Saturday, Wolves’ 2-1 victory over Southampton lifted them nine points clear of 18th-placed Ipswich Town, giving them some much-needed breathing room in the fight for survival.
Jorgen Strand Larsen’s brilliant brace secured the three points for Vitor Pereira’s side at St Mary’s, providing a significant boost to Wolves’ chances of staying up.
Even more impressive was the fact that Wolves managed the win without their star player, Matheus Cunha, who was serving the second match of his suspension for violent conduct after an incident with Milos Kerkez in an FA Cup tie against Bournemouth.
Many hoped Cunha would only miss the match against West Ham after serving the first two games of his ban, but Wolves have now received the worst possible news.
Matheus Cunha Given Additional One-Match Suspension and £50,000 Fine
For the second time this season, Cunha has been handed a ban for violent conduct, following his outburst against Ipswich Town in December. At that time, he was fined £80,000 and given a one-match suspension, which saw him miss Wolves’ 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in January.
This time, the club had hoped Cunha would only be banned for three matches, allowing him to return for the crucial six-pointer against Ipswich. However, the FA has now handed him an additional one-match ban and a £50,000 fine, meaning he will miss the home clash against West Ham and the trip to Portman Road.
Cunha, who was called up by Brazil during the international break, is now expected to return for the visit of Tottenham in April. However, Wolves fans may want to savor his performances while they can.
Cunha Could Have Just Seven Matches Left at Wolves
During the January transfer window, there was significant interest in Cunha, with many fearing he might leave mid-season. Fortunately, Cunha signed a new contract with Wolves that includes a £62.5 million release clause. However, multiple Premier League clubs have expressed interest, and Cunha is expected to depart Molineux this summer.
With that in mind, Pereira has little chance of retaining a striker who is set to play in the Champions League, and Wolves are likely to secure a club-record fee for him.
This means that once Cunha returns next month, he will have just seven matches left in what could be his final season at Wolves, bringing an abrupt end to his time at Molineux.
