Nottingham Forest are reportedly still interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha.
Last year, the East Midlands club faced a four-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations, resulting in a scramble to comply with the rules before the summer deadline.
However, under Nuno Espirito Santo’s leadership, Forest have experienced a remarkable turnaround, putting them in contention for a European spot and possible Champions League qualification.
With nine games left to play, Forest are seven points clear of sixth-place Newcastle United in the Premier League. Securing a spot in European competition would provide a financial boost heading into the summer transfer window.
According to TBR Football, Champions League qualification could prompt Forest to make a formal bid for Cunha.
Forest’s Ambitious Plans
Although Cunha signed a new long-term contract with Wolves in early February, it is reported that a release clause of around £63m was included.
Wolves are aware that interest in the Brazilian forward will likely intensify during the summer transfer window, regardless of their Premier League status.
Arsenal have previously been linked with Cunha, who has contributed 13 goals and 4 assists in the Premier League this season.
However, it seems Forest may look to secure the 25-year-old’s services if they qualify for the Champions League in 2025-26.
The report suggests that Cunha’s representatives have not yet ruled out a summer move to Forest, though the club may still face tough competition for his signature.
Where Would Cunha Fit at Forest?
Nuno Espirito Santo has already established a solid attacking quartet, featuring Anthony Elanga, Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Chris Wood, with other players providing sufficient backup.
If Cunha were to join Forest, he would likely expect a regular starting role, but this could most likely be out wide, as Gibbs-White is currently irreplaceable as a number 10.
The same can be said for Chris Wood, who has scored 18 goals in the Premier League this season. Nuno tends to prefer a physically dominant striker in the middle, which may not align with Cunha’s style.
As a result, Forest may prefer to pursue a different option if they break their £35m transfer record. They are more likely to target a player who can start in their preferred position.
