Leeds United played out a 2-2 draw with Swansea in the Championship on Saturday, but Illan Meslier’s actions left fans stunned.
Daniel Farke made a few changes to the lineup at Elland Road on 29 March, including bringing Ethan Ampadu back into the starting XI.
The match got off to a flying start for Leeds, as Brenden Aaronson punished Alan Sheehan’s side by scoring in the opening minute, giving the Whites an early lead. Meslier was the hero in the first half, saving a penalty, but his performance quickly soured after an incredible mistake.

In the second half, Meslier made a mistake that talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham called “unforgivable.” The 25-year-old goalkeeper dropped the ball from his hands, allowing Swansea’s Harry Darling to capitalize and equalize.
Durham couldn’t believe the blunder, especially since Meslier was under no pressure. He was in position to easily catch the cross from the corner flag but let the ball slip through his hands. Durham, visibly shocked, said on talkSPORT (29 March, 16:27): “It’s extraordinary. There’s no pressure on Meslier at all. He sees the ball from the moment it’s kicked. He literally drops it, and Darling steps in to score. It’s unforgivable.”
Willy Gnonto thought he had saved Leeds’ blushes with a late goal, but Swansea’s Zan Vipotnik scored an equalizer in the dying moments to secure a point for the visitors.
Farke’s Push for Automatic Promotion
Leeds United’s automatic promotion hopes took a hit as Sheffield United leapfrogged them into second place with a 3-1 win over Coventry City on Friday (28 March).
With promotion still within reach, Leeds must secure an automatic spot in the Premier League to avoid the anxiety of another playoff campaign. Farke’s side was in the playoffs last season but suffered a crushing defeat in the final to Southampton—something they’ll want to avoid this time around.
Leeds’ record at Elland Road has been solid, but with just three home games remaining, they need to make sure they collect maximum points. They can’t afford to drop any more, especially with Burnley breathing down their necks.
Despite Meslier’s costly errors, Leeds were fortunate to keep their lead at halftime against Swansea, thanks to his earlier penalty save. However, his mistakes in the second half allowed the visitors to level the score.
The squad remains strong, and there are high expectations from the fans. But if Leeds fail to clinch automatic promotion, questions may arise about Farke’s future, especially if they find themselves in another playoff battle.
