Marco Silva believes Adam Wharton should have been sent off during Fulham’s 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Wharton, already on a yellow card for a foul on Willian, appeared to kick out at Rodrigo Muniz and then elbow him in the back just moments later.
Former Palace defender Joachim Andersen argued to the referee that Wharton deserved a red card, but Darren England chose not to penalize the incident.
Since VAR can only intervene in cases of potential straight red cards, it wasn’t able to review whether Wharton’s actions warranted a second yellow. As a result, Wharton stayed on the field as Palace clinched a 3-0 win at Craven Cottage, securing a spot in the FA Cup semi-finals.
“If you ask me, it should have been a second yellow card,” Silva stated.
“Rodrigo was there, the ball wasn’t, and when you kick an opponent like that, it’s a second yellow. VAR can’t overturn it, but with the fourth officials having eight eyes, they should have noticed it.”
Silva continued: “That incident could have had a huge impact on the game. The referees missed it, and unfortunately, we’re starting to get used to these kinds of situations.”
“It’s frustrating for us and our supporters. But in my opinion, the real frustration should lie with the fourth officials, who failed to spot it.”
