“So lazy”- Chris Sutton slams ‘lazy’ Rangers duo after what he did in Rangers win v Dundee
Chris Sutton was left confused after an incident involving Dujon Sterling in Rangers’ dramatic 4-3 victory over Dundee.
Barry Ferguson’s side seemed resigned to defeat after falling 3-1 behind in the Scottish Premiership match at Dens Park.
However, Rangers made a comeback, with goals from James Tavernier, Tom Lawrence, and a last-minute strike from Cyriel Dessers.
Despite the chaotic nature of the game, Sterling put in a solid performance for Rangers, although there were a few moments where he could have done better.
The 25-year-old was caught out of position when Jack Butland dropped the ball, allowing Joe Shaughnessy to extend Dundee’s lead, and was also outmuscled in the build-up to their third goal.
Sutton was particularly critical of Sterling’s role in the second goal, suggesting the defender should have been more alert to the situation.
Speaking on Sky Sports Football (29 March, 19:48), Sutton said: “I think Sterling, when he comes out, is really lazy there.
Butland could’ve done better, but Sterling should have been ready for a ball to be played in behind him.”
He added: “He’s far too lax with his defending, and in the end, Shaughnessy is onside when he scores.”
Rangers’ defensive issues remain a concern under Ferguson, despite the manager’s efforts to transform the team.
The Gers have conceded 12 goals in their last six matches across all competitions during Ferguson’s brief tenure and must improve defensively if they are to progress in the Europa League and turn around their season.
Athletic Bilbao will be a tough challenge in the quarter-finals, and the Light Blues’ recent defensive struggles will give the Spanish side confidence.
If Rangers get through that tie, tougher opponents like Tottenham and Manchester United await, where solid defense will be crucial.
Ferguson has lifted the mood at Ibrox and Auchenhowie, but he now needs to address the team’s defensive frailties.
Sterling and John Souttar must step up in the final stages of the campaign, or Ferguson’s positive impact will be undermined.
