Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford scored his first Premier League goal for Aston Villa in their 3-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex.
The match was level at halftime, but Rashford needed just six minutes into the second half to break the deadlock and give Villa the lead. After Brighton’s corner was cleared, Rashford sprinted forward and was picked out by Morgan Rogers with a delightful over-the-top pass. He controlled the ball beautifully before finishing with class.
Rashford then ran to celebrate in front of Villa’s traveling supporters.
Fellow January signings Marco Asensio and Donyell Malen added to the scoreline, completing Villa’s dominant win.
Rashford had already made an impact over the weekend, scoring twice against Preston North End to help Villa reach the FA Cup semifinals. He followed that up with another crucial strike against Brighton.
On this occasion, Unai Emery opted to bench Ollie Watkins in favor of playing Rashford as the central striker, a decision that paid off. In his 65 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Watkins, Rashford registered two shots—one being his goal, and another that missed the target without troubling goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The 27-year-old touched the ball 13 times, completing all nine of his passes. He contested just two ground duels, losing both, and made one interception.
Although not heavily involved, Rashford delivered when it mattered most, putting Villa in front at a crucial moment.
With Rashford leading the line in Villa’s last two games, it’s possible that Emery plans to keep him in the striker role moving forward. After this performance, Villa fans will be hopeful that Rashford can continue his fine form for the rest of the season.
Villa are back in action on Saturday when they host Nottingham Forest.
